Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative
Because my grandfather died of senile dementia (close to Alzheimer’s), I was very excited to come across the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative: Priority Alzheimer’s project.
AAQI is a grassroots quilting movement which at the time of this post (July 2009) had raised over $285,000 for Alzheimer’s research. It was founded by Ami Simms, a quilter whose mother has Alzheimer’s. AAQI runs a traveling quilt collection and raises money through the Priority Alzheimer’s project.
Priority Alzheimer’s quilts are mini art quilts less than 9″ by 12″ (fit in a 9″ x 12″ mailing envelope) which are auctioned off on the AAQI website.
In honor of my grandfather, I made 10 Priority Alzheimer’s quilts. Unfortunately, I didn’t ship them off right away since I lagged in creating hanging loops, etc, for their backs. But I’m almost finished and they should be shipped off soon. Here they are:
